A Brief History

Sunday, August the 13th in 1989 a group of committed and passionate Christians held the first worship service of Citywest Church under the leadership of our founding Pastor Murray Smith.

Pastor Murray’s passion for overseas mission saw Citywest working closely with World Outreach an international mission organisation as well as other individual missionaries in India, Africa, and Asia. Our partnership with World Outreach continues to this day.

After more than a decade of leadership Pastor Murray Smith raised up Pastor Chris Smith who had been a part of the pastoral team for several years as Senior Pastor. Under Pastor Chris’s leadership, Citywest leased and then purchased a building in the Lalor Park Shops to be used as the church office and to host some of the church’s activities and groups. Citywest continued its focus on local and overseas missions and the church developed a close and fruitful relationship with Seven Hills High School.

In 2015 Pastor Chris felt God leading him to conclude his time in ministry with Citywest and after a time of searching Pastor Jason Potter joined Citywest as the Lead Pastor in January 2016.

Under Pastor Jason’s leadership, Citywest continued to focus on local and overseas mission, opening Horizon Community Centre in April 2017. Pastor Jason resigned as the senior pastor in January 2020, and Pastor Chris Smith returned as the interim pastor for a season.

In July 2020, Pastor Chris handed over the leadership of Citywest Church to our new senior pastors John and Stef McDonald.

Over the years there have been many staff and literally hundreds of volunteers who have made Citywest Church who we are today.

Together we continue to pursue our mission to share Jesus everywhere he sends us, as we live in relationship with Him.
